Depending on the type of position you
are applying for, you will have to decide which format of resume will work
best for you and play to your strengths. The below will describe the
main criteria to help you decide:
Vocational / Trade positions.
Employers looking for vocational personnel and tradesmen
are interested in getting a feel for the personality of the candidates.
It has been shown in studies that employers are more likely to select a
candidate in the first 2 minutes of reading the CV. Therefore the
summary of the resume is one of the most important part in selling yourself
to your future employer.
Personality buzz-words include:
enthusiastic, personable, eager, self-motivated, quality orientated.
Administration / Service positions.
Employers looking for administrative or sales and service
personnel are interested in the candidates ability to be pro-active and
forward thinking. The training and jobs you have done are not enough
on their own to show potential employers that you are what they are looking
for. Therefore you should
include key points of your training and employment that show you have
improved the the performance of the company such as "responsible for
increasing the sales figures in the western area by over 30 % in six months
by using specific client based marketing".
Professional
buzz-words include: innovative, pro-active, teamwork, meeting
objectives, able to work independently.
Technical / Engineering positions.
Employers looking for Technical specialists are interested
in good technical resumes, these being resumes that emphasise your technical and
professional abilities to the finest details, including day to day
activities and responsibilities. There is not a requirement for elongated
personal details, interests and extra-curricular activities.
Another point, that differentiates Technical Resume's from other disciplines is the requirement for detailed CV's. One or two page CV's, the norm
for many jobs, are not appropriate. Instead a
narrative of your work experience starting with the most recent and working
in chronological order would give you a much greater chance of success.
